Hello friends! Before I say anything else, let me say, brrrrrrrrrrr, baby, it’s cold outside! And for that very reason, I have tucked my natural hair away. One of my favorite and super easy protective style is wearing my hair in a bun. For the past week, I have been wearing my hair in this jumbo bun due to the frigid weather. I don’t have to re-do the bun each night. I sleep with a silk scarf and also my satin bonnet. Double the protection! In the morning, I simply take them off and my hair is still laid to perfection. š
Here are some other posts that I’ve done with my hair in buns. You can see a major difference in how big and full my bun is now that I am natural versus how smaller they were when I had a perm. Click here to see my wimpy looking bun when I had a perm š¦ and you can click here to take a look at how full my bun started to get as I was transitioning.
For those of you that are not familiar with what “protective styling” is, here is the definition. A protective style is one that requires little to no manipulation of the hair. Meaning, you don’t have to comb your hair every day once the style is done. Hence the name, it’s purpose is the protect the hair or give it a break from daily styling, tugging, combing, brushing, and overall decreasing the wear and tear on your hair. Protective styles include but are not limited to weaves, braids, wigs, twists and my favorite, wearing your hair in a bun.
What are some protective styles that you’ve been wearing to protect your natural hair during the winter months?
Xo,
Nicky
First off, your bun is rockin! Second, brrrr back to you! š LOL! I thought about doing the bun for my hair but I can’t wear my MUST HAVE winter hat on top of it so I’ve settled with two simple side French braids for the last couple days. Stay warm my blogging sister!āļø
Hi! Thank you. I think I have perfected the bun. I love them and wear them all the time. It started out of laziness, and now it’s a great protective style for my natural hair. I look like a maniac in a hat with this style, but I wear my hat anyway. You should post a pic of your french braids so that I can see! š

Hi! Thanks for the reblog! How sweet are you! š
Very healthy! I can’t remember the last time I had a bun.
Hi Karen,
Thank you! I wear buns every month. Sometimes just for one day, sometimes for a week! Your hair would look fabulous in a high bun š
Thank goodness I can still get away with the big bow clipped right beneath the back of my high buns! So cute
Hey Phoebe,
Thank you. I have to try that look. I am so picky when it comes to bows and accessories in my hair.
Hey Nicky! I miss my blog sister! I love the high bun…love it! You wear it well, and you’re right…the bun you USED to have is nothing compared to the healthy bun you have now! Keep it moving…you are doing great on your natural hair journey. I have plans to do a natural hair post soon and I hope to talk about some new styles. Lookin’ great! Happy new year, dear friend!
Holy mackerel!
Muhala, I replied to this, or thought I did. Forgive me š¦ . Thank you! I love buns and wear them all the time. My permed hair could never give me this much life! Ha.
It’s going to be a wonderful 2014 for both of us!
Yes! I really love buns and my hair is just getting long enough to pull one off but i decided i may look a little better with a bang of some sort. I still need to grow it out a bit longer for a bun but all of a sudden i am noticing lots of growth…i love it!
