Have you ever written down your dreams and your goals, only to have many years go by without accomplishing any of them? If so, then you are not alone.
Thinking about your goals is one way to get started, but it’s certainly not enough to make those goals become a reality. Below are 4 short but powerful steps to accomplish your dreams and goals.
GRAB A PEN AND PAPER AND WRITE DOWN THOSE GOALS
I don’t know about you, but writing down my goals really does help me to be more productive. Seeing the goals written out motivates me to come up with a plan to make those goals come true. Studies show that you are 42% more likely to accomplish your goals if you write them down. I like to write my goals in my journals, on a post it note and even on the calendar. As I accomplish each goal, I cross them off of my list. I like to be able to look back over each month to see how much I have done and accomplished. Writing your goals down not only forces you to get clear on what you want to accomplish, but doing so also plays a huge part in motivating you to get started.
COMMIT TO THE PROCESS
This one is a tough one and where most people fall off the goal wagon. Commitment to the goal is required in order for you to accomplish the goal. Let me say that again, commitment to the goal is required in order for you to accomplish it. I have set many goals for myself and did not accomplish them because I lacked commitment. Some of those goals were losing weight and saving a certain amount of money. I struggled with accomplishing those goals in the past because I lacked commitment to the goals. Once you commit to your goal, you will do whatever it takes to accomplish it. Looking at the bigger picture and how acheiveing the goal with elevate my life always keeps me motivated to stay commited.
REVISIT THE GOAL
After you’ve written down the goal and committed to the process, be sure to revisit the goal. Do an assessment to see if you’ve set realistic goals for yourself. Evaluate how things are going and look at what is working and what isn’t working. Has there been any progress? Why or why not? Evaluate what things you need to adjust and continue working towards the goal.
DO NOT QUIT
This one is huge. Repeat after me, I will not quit, I will not quit. Oftentimes people quit too early or too quickly simply because whatever they are trying to achieve is hard. No one likes to feel uncomfortable and the feeling of discomfort causes many to throw in the towel. I’ve learned that throwing in the towel too quickly hinders your progress throughout life. Of course there are times when what you’re doing might not be working and you realize you need to do something different. That’s OK. There is nothing wrong with that. Change the strategy if you must but don’t change the goal (if it’s important to you).
I hope you found these tips helpful! This is my 4 step process that I use to tackle and accomplish my goals. Remember to have fun along the way and enjoy the journey!
